MS SQL Server on AWS vs Azure

We need to host an MS SQL Server for our application, that will contain a very large dataset. Performance and indexing for whole-DB search queries are key concerns.

We already have infrastructure in AWS, but we are not tied to it, so Azure is also an option. Certain people keep claiming that MS SQL Server is better in Azure because “… native …”, but they always fall short on details.

Can anyone please comment if Azure has any “native” advantages in hosting MS SQL Server as opposed to just hosting a Windows VM on AWS? Any value added services?
